Dramatic Loose Watercolours with Julie Mainstone...sold out

How often have you heard people talk about watercolour as a delicate medium?

Do you think of watercolour as a delicate medium and after you have finished, your painting lacks impact somehow?

Julie will help you to be brave and inject some drama into your work to dispel the myth that watercolours lack power. You will learn some techniques and processes to help get over the nervousness of using a bolder approach, whilst still keeping the elusive freshness of watercolour.

She will bring a selection of suggested photos you can work from. If there is a particular subject that inspires you, please bring along your own photos. The best ones will be full of colour, light and shade. Julie will supply photos you can work from or please feel free to bring along your own photo(s).  Materials to bring…

At least A4 size 200lb weight good quality watercolour paper. My favourite paper is Two Rivers Handmade cotton rag paper, but I will have a decent budget paper - Hahnemuhle Anniversary size 32cm x 24cm you can buy from me @ £1 per sheet.

A board to stick your paper onto (a bit bigger than your paper size)

Masking tape

Brushes -

A Chinese style or similar mop

(I use Pro Arte Sablesque size 4)

A large synthetic round brush

A small synthetic round brush

(I use Rosemary & Co Michael Klein range sizes 16 and 8)

Colours -

My basic list is...

A cool yellow like Cadmium Yellow pale

(I use Winsor Lemon)

A warm yellow like Cadmium yellow

(I use Daniel Smith New Gamboge)

Permanent Rose

*Cerulean

(French) Ultramarine

Raw Sienna

Burnt Sienna

*Indigo

I mainly use a mix of Winsor & Newton professional quality and Daniel Smith watercolour paints in tubes. I squeeze these on top of my paintbox to make sure I have wet paint to dip into.

You can use some others like the budget range of Cotman watercolours, but the cheaper the paint the less likely it will have a good proportion of pigment so may lack full character and strength. Bring what you have there may be opportunities for you to try colours in your box you have never used

* For full impact I recommend getting Winsor and Newton professional quality for at least the Indigo and Cerulean.

Please bring 2 or 3 pots for your painting water...old yogurt style tubs are useful.

Some kitchen roll

Any photos you want to use.
